‘In On The Kill Taker‘ was the third full length album from Fugazi and was released in June 1993. Formed around the Washington DC area from the remnants of punk hardcore pioneers Minor Threat, Ian MacKaye, Guy Picciotto, Joe Lally and Brendan Canty were already a name band at this time.
Famed for their political positioning, straight edge tendencies and Dischord record label , famously turning down Atlantic for a $10 million deal and Lollapalooza, the band have always been their own masters.
In On The Kill Taker takes their already established post hardcore sound and with the production help of Ted Niceley sharpens it up into an angular weapon. Kicking off with ‘Facet Squared‘ and ‘Public Witness Programme‘ the statement of intent is pretty clear. The slow burning ‘Returning The Screw‘ leads into the bombast of ‘Smallpox Champion‘ . A great album from start to finish, the design of the album comes with found imagery and text, built up in a collage style. The front cover depicts notes from a lined notebook making up the albums title, along with a washed out image of the Washington Monument all co-ordinated by resident collaborator, artist and film maker Jem Cohen.
As ever, here rendered in felt pen.
