Neutral Milk Hotel – In The Aeroplane Over the Sea

Folk Pop of the lo-fi variety doesn’t come much greater than this lot’s second album from 1998. Neutral Milk Hotel released ‘In The Aeroplane Over the Sea‘ to initial mixed reviews. The indie press loved it, with Pitchfork lauding much praise, but the more mainstream world didn’t really know what to make of Jeff Mangum and companies new effort.

The album later would cement the bands reputation, filtering into output from collaborators and groups formed by members like ‘Olivia Tremor Control‘ and Jeremy Barnes’A Hawk and a Hacksaw‘ project. Reunited in 2013 the band have played some impressively reviewed shows in the US and are coming to the UK and Europe in 2014, with a couple of shows in Manchester and London’s Roundhouse.

The original cover features an adapted vintage postcard,  a collaboration between Mangum and R.E.M.s designer Chris Bilheimer, evoking the turn of the century, penny arcade imagery. Here, obviously, rendered in felt pen.
